I was born and raised on the beaches of Southern California but headed to the desert to pursue a degree in Visual Communications from the University of Arizona. Over my 20+ year career, I’ve gained tremendous skill in design, management, and creative leadership working in-house for several well-known corporations and established digital agencies.
Recently, I embarked on a new path and became the Lead UXDI Instructor for General Assembly in Santa Monica. The experience is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I’ve been able to teach and share my passion for design to students looking to change their career trajectory. Many of my graduates have gone on to work for prestigious companies such as IBM, HAUS, Kaiser Permanente, The World Surf League, and Wonderful.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children, riding atop of a mountain bike or surfboard, seeing live music, and learning how to take better photos.
"Gerrit has a keen eye for design and is a quick thinker when it comes to information architecture. Efficient and detail oriented, he was a hands-on senior art director that produced a large amount of good work, not just beautiful interfaces, but functional designs that become successful products.
Gerrit is a pleasure to work with. We often shared inspiration with each other, which helped me grow as a designer. His outstanding performance and leadership skills eventually allowed him to take on the creative director role at DIRECTV. He has an extensive creative background and is a valuable asset to any team. I would love to work with him again!"
"Gerrit's design work is always amazing and he's simply a fun guy to work with. He is always on top of every innovative website and mobile app long before anyone else. Gerrit was definitely the most influential Art Director in the group, and when pitching new designs, his design directions were chosen ninety percent of the time. The DIRECTV creative team received many design awards and Gerrit had his name on every one of them. Gerrit is an all-star and I highly recommend him."
